Jean-Joseph Mouret was born on 11 April 1682 in Avignon, in southern France. At that time Avignon belonged not to the King of France but to the Pope, the head of the Catholic Church. His father was a silk merchant who is said to have loved music. In his mid-twenties Mouret moved to Paris to begin his career as a musician.
In 1708 Mouret was introduced to the Duchess of Maine, the wife of a son of Louis XIV, and she made him her director of music. The Duchess was famous for the splendid all-night entertainments she held at her château in Sceaux, near Paris, called the 'Grandes Nuits de Sceaux'. For the sixteen nights held in the 1714–15 season, Mouret was one of several composers who wrote interludes and story-telling cantatas.
That same year, 1714, Mouret's opéra-ballet Les fêtes de Thalie was staged at the Paris Opéra and caused a sensation. He went on to conduct the Opéra orchestra, direct the music of the New Italian Theatre, and lead the famous concert series called the Concert Spirituel. His Suites de symphonies of 1729 include the trumpet Rondeau that later became famous.
In his later years, Mouret suffered one setback after another in his work and finances. It is said that as his rival Rameau grew more popular, Mouret became bitter and mentally ill. In 1738 he was taken into the asylum at Charenton near Paris, where he died on 22 December that year, aged 56. The site of his grave is unknown. In the 20th century his Rondeau became the theme of an American TV programme, and his name became known again.
Jean-Joseph Mouret was born in France in 1682. He worked for a rich duchess. She had big parties at her castle. Mouret wrote music for these parties. His Rondeau has bright trumpets. Today it is a famous TV theme.

The American public television programme Masterpiece Theatre, now called Masterpiece, began in 1971 with Mouret's Rondeau as its theme. The shining trumpet tune became famous along with the show, and it is said to have become a popular choice for weddings in America too.
Avignon, where Mouret was born, is a French city today, but back then it belonged to the Pope. In the Middle Ages the popes even lived there, and a huge papal palace still stands in the city. So this French court musician was actually born in the 'Pope's land'.
The 'Great Nights' that the Duchess of Maine held at Sceaux were lavish entertainments with plays, music and spectacles going on through the night. Mouret worked on the music, and he was one of several composers who supplied music for the sixteen nights held in 1714–15. His bright, elegant style was perfect for such glittering parties.
Les fêtes de Thalie, staged at the Paris Opéra in 1714, caused such a stir that it was called a 'success by scandal'. Soon a follow-up called La critique des fêtes de Thalie, which made fun of the criticism, was written and staged as well.
In the 1730s, as Rameau's operas became hugely popular, Mouret's work began to dry up. It is said that he grew jealous of Rameau and became mentally ill. He died in the asylum at Charenton, and nobody knows where his grave is.
