Spanish Dances is a set of five dances by Moritz Moszkowski, a composer born in Breslau, then part of Prussia (today Wrocław in Poland), who worked in Germany. They were first written for piano duet, with two people playing one piano. From the bright, lively first dance to the final 'Bolero', Spanish-style rhythms and colorful melodies appear one after another.
The set was published in Berlin in 1876 and dedicated to the composer's older brother, the writer Alexander Moszkowski. Moritz was only in his early twenties. In this work, a young composer living in Germany painted his own picture of Spain in sound. The set quickly became a huge hit and made his name widely known.
Because it became so popular, Spanish Dances was arranged for solo piano, orchestra, violin and more. The orchestral versions were made by his friend Philipp Scharwenka and by Valentin Frank. Today, it is still Moszkowski's most famous work, enjoyed both as a duet and as solo pieces.
This is music for two people at one piano. There are five dances. They sound like music from Spain. But the composer lived in Germany! The music was a big hit.

Paderewski, the great Polish pianist who later became prime minister, is said to have remarked that after Chopin, Moszkowski understood best how to write for the piano. He was highly respected as a composer who knew the sound of the piano inside out.
In his later years, Moszkowski had sold the rights to his works and put the money into German, Polish and Russian bonds. World War I made them worthless, and he lived in poverty in Paris. When people heard this, they held a benefit concert at Carnegie Hall in New York with 15 grand pianos on stage.
Moszkowski was also a popular teacher. His students included the harpsichordist Wanda Landowska, the Spanish composer Joaquín Turina, the conductor Thomas Beecham and the pianist Josef Hofmann, who all became famous later. He passed on his skills to students from many countries and with many instruments.
Alexander Moszkowski, the brother to whom the set was dedicated, was a writer in Berlin known for humor and satire. He even wrote a book of conversations with the physicist Albert Einstein. The younger brother entertained people with music, and the older one with words.
