Moritz Moszkowski was born in 1854 into a wealthy Polish-Jewish family in Breslau, then in Prussia and now Wrocław in Poland. He began learning music at home, and in 1865 the family moved to Dresden, where he studied piano at the conservatory. In 1869 he moved to Berlin and studied composition and piano at two leading music schools.
He made his debut as a pianist in 1873, and in 1875 he played his own piano concerto on two pianos with the great Franz Liszt. Around the same time he began teaching at a Berlin conservatory, where he stayed for about 25 years. His Spanish Dances, Op. 12, first written for piano duet, and his Serenade, Op. 15, became huge hits and were played on home pianos all over Europe.
In 1884 he married Henriette Chaminade, the younger sister of the composer Cécile Chaminade, and they had a son and a daughter. But around 1890 the couple separated, and they divorced in 1892. His wife is said to have left him for the poet Ludwig Fulda. A nerve problem in his arm made him cut back on concerts, yet in 1897 he moved to Paris as a famous, wealthy composer. Pupils such as the pianist Josef Hofmann, the harpsichordist Wanda Landowska and the conductor Thomas Beecham came to learn from him.
In 1906 his daughter died at seventeen, and his own health failed until he withdrew from the world. He had sold his copyrights and put the money into German, Polish and Russian bonds, but they became worthless in the First World War, and he fell into poverty. In 1921 a benefit concert was held for him in New York. Part of the money was sent to Paris at once, and the rest bought him an annuity. But in March 1925, just as the payments were starting, he died of stomach cancer in Paris, aged 70.
