The Story

The Merry Widow Waltz" comes from "The Merry Widow," an operetta by the Hungarian-born composer Franz Lehár. The melody is best known from the last-act duet "Lippen schweigen" ("Lips are silent"), sung by Hanna and Danilo. As the words say that hearts can speak without words, the sweet, gentle melody flows on.

The heroine, Hanna, is a young widow whose very rich husband has died. The small, imaginary country of Pontevedro is worried: if she marries a foreigner, her money will leave the country. So they want her to marry a man from home. The man given this job is Danilo, her old love. The two are too proud to be honest, but in the waltz their hearts finally meet.

It was first performed on 30 December 1905 at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. It is said that the theater did not believe in the show and spent little money on it. But it became a huge hit and was staged around the world, including London and New York. It was made into films many times and became one of the most successful operettas of the 20th century.

This is a sweet waltz from a funny opera. A rich young woman and a man love each other. But they do not say "I love you." They dance a waltz, and their hearts speak. The opera was a very big hit.

It is said that before the premiere, the theater managers did not believe in the work. Some stories say they asked Lehár to withdraw it, and others say they spent as little money as possible. Yet it became a worldwide hit. You never know!

The librettists, Léon and Stein, first asked the composer Richard Heuberger to write the music, but they were not happy with it. Someone at the theater suggested Lehár. They asked him to write one number as a test, liked it, and gave him the job.

In the 1907 London production, the large feathered hat worn by the actress playing Hanna became famous. The "Merry Widow hat" became a huge fashion trend in Britain and America. An operetta changed what people wore on the street!

The story comes from "L'attaché d'ambassade," a comedy by the French playwright Henri Meilhac. Meilhac was also one of the writers of the libretto for Bizet's "Carmen." Viennese operetta and French opera are connected in a surprising way.
