The Story

Flower Song' is a piano piece by the German composer Gustav Lange. Its German title is 'Blumenlied'. A soft, singing melody flows freely over a gently swaying accompaniment, like a flower opening. It is not too difficult, yet it sounds beautiful, so it has long been loved by piano students.

Lange was born in 1830 and died in 1889. In 19th-century Germany, more and more families had pianos, and there was great demand for 'salon music' that was easy to play and lovely to hear. Today, not many people know Lange's name, but 'Flower Song' and 'Edelweiss' (Op. 31) are still well known. In Japan especially, 'Flower Song' is a standard piece at piano recitals. It has also been arranged for violin, and its friendly melody is just as charming on another instrument.

Lange is said to have written about 500 piano pieces in his life. Most of them were short, friendly pieces for people to enjoy at home. He did not become famous for big symphonies, but he made piano time happier for many people.

In 19th-century Europe, people liked to gather in the parlor, or salon, of a home and enjoy playing the piano. Short, beautiful pieces that were easy to play there are called 'salon music'. 'Flower Song' and Bądarzewska's 'A Maiden's Prayer' are both examples.

Lange also wrote a piano piece called 'Edelweiss' (Op. 31), named after the Alpine flower, and it is also well known. It is a different piece from the song 'Edelweiss' in the film The Sound of Music. Maybe Lange had a special gift for beautiful pieces about flowers!

'Flower Song' often appeared in German and American music books of the 1800s, but today it may be most popular in Japan. You often see its name on piano recital programs. It is a classic choice when a student who has improved a little wants to play something beautiful.
