グスタフ・ランゲ

グスタフ・ランゲは1830年8月13日、ドイツ中部の町エアフルトの近くにある村シュヴェルシュテットに生まれました。当時この地方はプロイセン王国の一部でした。最初の音楽の先生は父親で、ピアノとオルガンを教わりました。教会で使われるオルガンを学んだことは、のちに音楽学校で本格的に学ぶための土台になりました。Gustav Lange was born on 13 August 1830 in Schwerstedt, a village near the city of Erfurt in central Germany, which was then part of the Kingdom of Prussia. His first music teacher was his father, who taught him the piano and the organ. Learning the organ, the instrument of the church, gave him a foundation for serious study at music school later on.

その後ランゲはベルリンへ出て、ピアノ、オルガン、和声（和音のきまり）、作曲を学びました。学んだのは、王立の教会音楽の学校だったと考えられていますが、はっきりとはわかっていません。先生には、オルガン奏者アウグスト・ヴィルヘルム・バッハ、作曲家エドゥアルト・グレル、ピアニストのアルベルト・レシュホルンがいました。Lange then went to Berlin, where he studied piano, organ, harmony — the rules of chords — and composition. He probably studied at the Royal Institute for Church Music, although this is not certain. His teachers included the organist August Wilhelm Bach, the composer Eduard Grell and the pianist Albert Löschhorn.

ランゲは長いあいだベルリンで暮らし、演奏と作曲を続けました。1860年代に書いたいくつかの曲が評判になると、それに力を得て、家庭で楽しめる軽やかなピアノ曲を次々に発表します。19世紀のヨーロッパでは、ピアノのある家庭がふえ、こうした「サロン小品」がよく売れました。代表作は「エーデルワイス」作品31と「花の歌」作品39です。Lange lived in Berlin for many years, performing and composing. When some of his pieces from the 1860s became successful, he was encouraged to write one light, popular piano piece after another for people to enjoy at home. In 19th-century Europe, more and more homes had a piano, and such 'salon pieces' sold well. His best-known works are 'Edelweiss', Op. 31, and the 'Flower Song' (Blumenlied), Op. 39.

ランゲは1889年7月20日、ドイツのヴェルニゲローデで58歳で亡くなりました。のこした作品はおよそ500曲。ヨーロッパではやがて名前があまり聞かれなくなりましたが、「花の歌」は今も世界中で弾かれています。とくに日本ではとても人気があり、ピアノを習う人があこがれる1曲として、発表会などでよく演奏されています。Lange died in Wernigerode, Germany, on 20 July 1889, aged 58. He left around 500 works. In Europe his name gradually faded from view, but the 'Flower Song' is still played all over the world. It is especially popular in Japan, where it is a piece many piano students dream of playing and is often heard at recitals.
