The Story

This sonata in E-flat major was written in 1794, during Haydn's second stay in London. It is his last large piano sonata. It has three movements, and the first is grand, full of rich chords, almost like an orchestra. More than 60 piano sonatas by Haydn are counted, including some that are lost or may not be by him, and this big-scale work feels like a summary of them all.

The sonata was written for Therese Jansen, a pianist active in London. She was a pupil of the famous pianist and composer Muzio Clementi, and a very skilled player. London pianos of the time are said to have been louder and richer in sound than Viennese pianos. Haydn used that power to make the piece brilliant and strong.

The second movement is in E major, a key very far from E-flat major, and it takes listeners by surprise. In 1795, when Jansen married Gaetano Bartolozzi, son of a famous engraver, Haydn was a witness at the wedding. Today this sonata is still loved by many pianists as one of Haydn's greatest piano works.

This is a big piece for piano. Haydn wrote it in London for a brilliant female pianist. The music is strong and bright. The second part is in a very different key. It is a big surprise for your ears!

Listening Guide

Listen to the grand theme with full chords at the start of the first movement. It is hard to believe it is just one piano.
As soon as the second movement begins, the key changes completely. Feel how the sound moves into another world.
The third movement is fast, with fingers racing over the keys. Enjoy Haydn's humor, with sudden stops and starts.

Therese Jansen, the pianist who received this sonata, married Gaetano Bartolozzi in 1795. The witness at the wedding was none other than Haydn himself. It shows the trust and friendship between the composer and the pianist.

The first movement is in E-flat major, and the second is in E major. On the keyboard, they are only a half step apart, but in the world of keys they are very distant, which was a surprising choice at the time. Haydn switches to a clear, shining sound, as if taking listeners to another world.

Jansen's teacher, Muzio Clementi, is famous for a piano contest with Mozart in front of the emperor in Vienna in 1781. Jansen, who studied with him, was one of the finest players in London. Haydn could write such a difficult piece because he trusted her skill.

Haydn is thought to have written his last three piano sonatas, including this one, for Jansen. He also dedicated several piano trios to her. One pianist he met in London helped Haydn's late piano music to blossom.
