ピアノ三重奏曲第39番 ト長調 より「ジプシー・ロンド」

ハイドンが楽譜に書いた題は「ロンド・アッロンガレーゼ（ハンガリー風ロンド）」です。「ジプシー・ロンド」は、あとから広まった呼び名。当時ハンガリーでは、ロマの楽団が演奏する、速くはげしい踊りの音楽が人気でした。ハイドンはそのはなやかな雰囲気を、家庭用の三重奏に取り入れたのです。

The title Haydn wrote in the score was 'Rondo all'Ongarese,' which means 'Rondo in the Hungarian style.' 'Gypsy Rondo' is a name that spread later. In Hungary at the time, fast and fiery dance music played by Roma bands was very popular, and Haydn brought that exciting mood into a trio for home music-making.

曲がささげられたレベッカ・シュレーターは、ハイドンがロンドンで出会った未亡人です。ハイドンは彼女からの手紙を自分のノートに書き写して残していました。ハイドンには妻がいましたが、夫婦の仲はうまくいっていなかったと言われています。年をとってからも、彼女のことをなつかしく語ったそうです。

Rebecca Schroeter, to whom the trios were dedicated, was a widow Haydn met in London. He copied her letters into his own notebook. Haydn was married, but his marriage is said to have been unhappy. Even when he was old, he is said to have spoken of her fondly.

ハイドンのピアノ三重奏曲では、チェロはたいていピアノの左手の低い音と同じ音を弾いて、響きを厚くする役目です。当時のピアノは今より低音がひびきにくかったため、と考えられています。3人で弾くのに、主役はほとんどピアノ。今の三重奏とはずいぶんちがうのです。

In Haydn's piano trios, the cello usually plays the same low notes as the pianist's left hand, to make the sound fuller. This is thought to be because the pianos of that time had a weaker bass than modern ones. There are three players, but the piano is almost always the star, quite different from trios today.

「ジプシー」は、ロマの人びとに対して使われてきた古い呼び方です。今では差別的だと感じる人が多いため、人びとを指すときは「ロマ」という言い方が広く使われています。曲のあだ名としては今も「ジプシー・ロンド」が定着していますが、その背景も知っておくと、曲の聴こえ方が少し深まります。

'Gypsy' is an old word that has been used for the Roma people. Many people find it offensive today, so 'Roma' is now widely used for the people. The nickname 'Gypsy Rondo' is still common, but knowing the background can make the music even more meaningful.
