This Sarabande comes from Handel's Suite in D minor for harpsichord (HWV 437). The sarabande is a slow dance in three beats, with weight on the second beat. A solemn theme of chords is followed by two variations that decorate it with faster notes.
The suite was published in London in 1733 in Handel's second collection of keyboard suites, but the music itself is thought to have been written much earlier, when he was young. The sarabande's exact origins are unclear, but it may have come to Spain from Latin America in the 16th century as a fast, wild dance. As it spread to France and Germany, it changed into a slow, dignified dance.
The piece became famous through Stanley Kubrick's 1975 film Barry Lyndon. An orchestral arrangement of this sarabande is heard again and again, including in the duel scenes, and it leaves a powerful impression. The film's music even won an Academy Award for its adapted score.
This is a slow dance in three beats. Handel wrote it for the harpsichord. The music sounds dark and serious. A famous movie used it in 1975. After that, many people loved it.

In the 16th century, the sarabande was thought to be a wild and improper dance in Spain, and it was banned in 1583. At that time, it was a fast and lively dance. Within about a hundred years, it transformed into a slow, noble dance performed at royal courts.
In Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, this sarabande is arranged for orchestra and heard many times from the beginning to the end of the film. It is used especially in the tense duel scenes, where its heavy, step-like rhythm matches the hero moving toward his fate.
As a young man, Handel trained in Italy, and it is said that he had a keyboard contest in Rome with the Italian composer Domenico Scarlatti. According to the story, it was a draw on the harpsichord, but Handel won on the organ. It is a fitting tale for a master keyboard player.
In Baroque suites, the basic order was Allemande, Courante, Sarabande and Gigue. The sarabande was usually the slowest of the four, with a solemn, expressive character. Bach's cello suites and other works also contain moving sarabandes.
