Handel's Organ Concertos, Op. 4, are six concertos for organ and orchestra. They were written in 1735 and 1736 and published in 1738 by John Walsh in London. They were not meant for a huge church organ, but for a small chamber organ with no pedals, placed among the orchestra.
At that time, Handel was putting on English oratorios, large choral works that tell religious stories, and other big works such as odes in London. Between their parts, he presented these concertos, usually playing the organ himself. For example, Nos. 2 and 3 were first played with Esther in March 1735, and Nos. 1 and 6 with Alexander's Feast in February 1736.
No. 6 was first performed in Alexander's Feast in 1736 as a concerto for harp, lute, lyrichord (a kind of keyboard instrument) and other instruments, and it was later published as an organ concerto. Today it is also famous as a harp concerto. Handel was known as a master of improvising on the organ, and his playing was one of the main reasons people came.
Handel was a great organ player. He wrote most of these concertos to play himself. He played them between the parts of big works for singers. The audience enjoyed his playing! One of them was first written to show off the harp.

At his oratorio performances, the audience looked forward to Handel playing an organ concerto himself in the interval. It kept people entertained even when no one was singing. Handel was also known for adding improvisation on the spot, so it had the excitement of a live show.
No. 6 in B-flat major was first performed in Alexander's Feast in 1736 as a concerto featuring harp, lute and other instruments. The harp part was played by the Welsh harpist William Powell. It was published as an organ concerto in 1738, and today it is often played on either harp or organ.
Big church organs have pedal keyboards played with the feet, but for these concertos Handel used a small chamber organ with one keyboard and no pedals. That is why the music is not too heavy. It feels light and friendly, like a conversation with the orchestra.
Handel kept writing organ concertos after Op. 4. No. 13 in F major, first played in 1739, imitates the calls of the cuckoo and the nightingale, so it is nicknamed 'The Cuckoo and the Nightingale'. Try listening to an organ that sings like birds.
