The 'Hallelujah' chorus comes from Handel's oratorio Messiah. An oratorio tells a story, often from the Bible, with solo singers, choir and orchestra, but unlike an opera, there are no costumes or acting. This chorus closes Part Two of the three parts, and the word 'Hallelujah,' meaning 'Praise God,' is repeated again and again with great power.
Handel was born in Germany but made his career in London. In the summer of 1741, he wrote Messiah in just over three weeks, using a text that his friend Charles Jennens had put together from Bible verses. It was first performed the next year, 1742, at a charity concert in Dublin, Ireland, and it was a great success.
There is a famous story that at a London performance, King George II was so moved that he stood up during this chorus, and the audience followed him. However, there is no reliable record from the time, so it is thought to be a legend. Even so, in some places people still stand for this chorus. Messiah is often performed around Christmas, and in Japan it is a year-end favorite.
This is a big song for a choir. The choir sings 'Hallelujah!' many times. Handel wrote the whole work in about 24 days. People often stand up when they hear this song. Some say a king stood up first.

The story that King George II stood up first appears, it is said, in a letter written decades after the premiere. It is not even clear whether the king attended that performance. The story is often told as the origin of standing for the 'Hallelujah' chorus, but no one knows exactly how the custom began.
Handel wrote dates in his own score, showing that he composed the whole work in about 24 days, from August 22 to September 14, 1741. It is amazing that he finished such a huge work, more than two hours long, in such a short time.
For the premiere in Dublin, ladies were asked not to wear hoops in their skirts and gentlemen were asked not to bring swords, so that more people could fit inside. As a result, about 700 people are said to have attended. It was a premiere everyone wanted to see.
From 1750, Handel conducted a charity performance of Messiah every year for the Foundling Hospital in London, a home that cared for abandoned babies and children. The money raised helped run the hospital. From its charity premiere onward, Messiah has been closely linked with helping others.
