The Story

This Gavotte is a dance from the opera Rosine, written in 1786 by François-Joseph Gossec, a composer who worked in France. A gavotte is an elegant French dance with two main beats in a bar. Its sweet, lightly skipping melody became popular, and it was later arranged for violin and piano. Now it is loved all over the world.

The gavotte began as a French country dance, but in the 17th and 18th centuries it became an elegant dance at royal courts such as that of Louis XIV. It is known for starting in the middle of a bar, as if hopping forward. Bach's suites contain many gavottes. Gossec's piece also has this light, stepping feel.

Gossec was born in a village in what is now Belgium. In Paris he wrote many works, including symphonies, operas, and music for the festivals of the French Revolution. He lived to the age of 95 and also taught at the Paris Conservatoire. In Japan, the Gavotte is well known as a standard piece in violin method books and is a favorite at recitals.

The opera Rosine premiered in Paris in 1786, but it is almost never performed today. However, the gavotte from it became very popular after it was arranged for violin. Many people know the melody without ever having heard of the opera.

In Book 1 of the Suzuki Method, a violin teaching method born in Japan, this Gavotte is the last piece. Children who started with the 'Twinkle, Twinkle' variations play it as their goal at the end of the first book.

Gossec was born in 1734 and died in 1829. That means he was born before Mozart and outlived Beethoven. His long life spanned the end of the Baroque, the Classical era and the beginning of the Romantic era.

Gossec began writing symphonies in the 1750s, when they were still rare in France, and he is sometimes called the 'father of the French symphony'. During the French Revolution, he wrote music for wind bands and choirs to be performed outdoors by large groups, bringing music to the revolutionary festivals.
