Pomp and Circumstance March No. 4 is the fourth march in Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance set, finished in June 1907. It is often in the shadow of the famous No. 1, but it is a bright and proud march in G major. In its middle section, called the trio, a broad melody makes you want to walk tall.
The title Pomp and Circumstance comes from a line in Shakespeare's tragedy Othello: 'Pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war!' No. 4 is dedicated to George Robertson Sinclair, organist of Hereford Cathedral, whose initials head Variation 11 of the Enigma Variations. It was first performed in August 1907 at the Queen's Hall in London.
The trio melody was later given words. In 1909 it became a song celebrating the opening of Kingsway, a new London street, and during the Second World War it became the Song of Liberty with words by A. P. Herbert. It was played as the recessional at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, and as the first piece of the recessional music at the coronation of Charles III in 2023.
This is a big and happy march from England. It is the fourth march of a famous set. The middle part has a wide and proud tune. People played it at a royal wedding in 1981. It was also played when a new king was crowned.

On 29 July 1981, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were married at St Paul's Cathedral in London. As the newly married couple walked out, this march, Pomp and Circumstance No. 4, was played. Hundreds of millions of people around the world are said to have watched the wedding on TV.
Sinclair, the dedicatee of No. 4, was a close friend of Elgar. Variation 11 of the Enigma Variations is said to show Sinclair's bulldog, Dan, falling into a river and paddling back to the bank. He was a man remembered in music together with his dog!
During the Second World War, the writer A. P. Herbert put patriotic words to the trio tune, and it was sung as the Song of Liberty. Just as the tune of No. 1 became Land of Hope and Glory, No. 4 also had its time as a song for the nation.
