The Slavonic Dances are pieces Dvořák based on the dance rhythms of the Czech lands and other Slavic countries. There are sixteen in all: eight in the first set (Op. 46, 1878) and eight in the second (Op. 72, 1886). They were first written for piano duet, and Dvořák also arranged them for orchestra. The fiery No. 1 of the first set and the wistful No. 2 of the second set are especially famous.
Before Dvořák became widely known, he had little money and applied for an Austrian state grant for artists. Brahms, one of the judges, saw his talent and recommended his music to the publisher Simrock. Simrock wanted piano-duet pieces like Brahms's Hungarian Dances, and that is how the Slavonic Dances were born.
When the first set was published in 1878, a glowing review appeared in a Berlin newspaper, and the music sold extremely well. Dvořák's name quickly became known all over Europe. The melodies are not borrowed folk songs; he wrote them all himself. These dances are full of Czech character.
These are dance pieces from Central Europe. At first, they were for two people playing one piano. Then the composer wrote them for orchestra. They were a big hit! After this music, people all over Europe knew his name.

Brahms wrote to the publisher Simrock to recommend the unknown Dvořák. The Slavonic Dances that Simrock then asked for became a huge hit, and the two composers became lifelong friends. Brahms is even said to have later checked proofs of Dvořák's scores for him.
Brahms's Hungarian Dances use many existing melodies in Hungarian and Roma styles, and some can be traced to known composers. Dvořák's Slavonic Dances borrow the rhythms and moods of dances like the furiant and the dumka, but every melody is his own.
No. 1 of the first set is a furiant, a Czech dance in three beats, but some accents make it sound like two beats at times. This clash of rhythms gives the dance its wild energy.
The wistful No. 2 of the second set was arranged for violin and piano by the great violinist Fritz Kreisler, and that version became widely loved. It has a tender charm different from the orchestral version.
