The Story

The Carnival Overture is an orchestral piece Dvořák wrote in 1891. From the very first moment, tambourine, triangle and cymbals ring out, and the music is bright and full of energy, like a whole town celebrating a festival. There is also a quiet, romantic scene in the middle, and the piece ends with the festival in full force again.

This piece was written as the second of a set of three overtures called 'Nature, Life and Love'. The first, In Nature's Realm, stands for Nature; this Carnival stands for Life; and the third, Othello, stands for Love. Dvořák himself explained that it shows the feelings of a lonely traveler who reaches, at twilight, a town where a festival is going on.

The three overtures were first performed together in Prague in April 1892, conducted by Dvořák himself. It was one of his farewell concerts before he left for America to become director of a music conservatory in New York. Of the three, Carnival is by far the most popular, and today it is often played on its own to open concerts.

This music is like a big festival. Tambourines and cymbals play from the start! In the middle, the music becomes quiet and sweet. Then the party starts again. Dvořák played it before he went to America.

Carnival is the second of a set of three overtures standing for Nature, Life and Love. At the premiere, the three were grouped under one opus number, but later they got separate numbers: Op. 91, 92 and 93. Today Carnival is by far the most famous of the three.

A shared 'nature theme' appears in all three overtures. In Carnival, it quietly shows up in the calm middle section. It is an important musical link that ties the three works together.

In April 1892, Dvořák premiered the three overtures in Prague. It was one of his farewell concerts before he went to America to become director of the National Conservatory in New York. It was in America that he would later write the 'New World' Symphony.

Dvořák described the piece as the story of a lonely, thoughtful traveler who arrives at twilight in a town full of festival crowds. If you listen imagining that slightly lonely traveler behind the lively music, you can enjoy it in a new way.
