The Story

String Quartet No. 12, the 'American', was written by Dvořák in the summer of 1893, while he was living in the United States. It is played by two violins, a viola, and a cello. Full of open, cheerful melodies, it stands beside the New World Symphony as a highlight of his American years.

That summer, the Dvořák family left New York and stayed in Spillville, a small village in Iowa. Many Czech immigrants lived there, and it was the hometown of his assistant, Josef Kovařík. In this village, where people spoke Czech and he could play the organ at church, Dvořák felt relaxed and at home.

The quartet was premiered in Boston in January 1894 by the Kneisel Quartet. Its simple melodies use a five-note scale, like do-re-mi-so-la, and they remind listeners of both the wide American land and Czech folk songs. Today it is one of the most popular string quartets of all, and a perfect first step into chamber music.

This music is for four string players. The composer wrote it in a small village in America. Many people there came from his home country. He finished it very quickly, in about two weeks. The music sounds happy and free.

Dvořák began soon after arriving in the village, sketched the whole quartet in about three days, and finished it in about two weeks. His sketch is said to carry a note meaning, 'Thank God. I am content. It went quickly.'

In the third movement, there is a high little figure like a bird's song. It is said to be the call of a scarlet tanager that Dvořák heard in the woods near Spillville. It is just like this nature-loving composer.

As a young man, Dvořák played the viola in a theater orchestra in Prague. One of its conductors was Smetana, who later wrote The Moldau. Giving the first melody of this quartet to the viola seems a fitting choice for a former viola player.

The house in Spillville where Dvořák stayed still stands. Today it is a museum of carved wooden clocks, with an exhibit about Dvořák. There is also a monument to him in the village, a source of pride for its Czech American community.
