ホー!この曲のほとんどは、となりの音との間がみんな同じ、6つの音の「全音音階」でできているんだ。

この曲のおはなし The Story

「帆」は、ドビュッシーの『前奏曲集 第1巻』の2曲目です。高いところでふわふわとただようメロディーと、ずっと低く鳴りつづける1つの音が、風にゆれる帆のような、またはひらひら舞う布のような、ぼんやりした風景をつくります。楽譜には「きっちりしないリズムで、なでるように」という意味の指示があります。Voiles is the second piece in Debussy's first book of Preludes. A melody floats high above while one low note keeps sounding underneath. Together they paint a hazy scene, like sails moving in the wind or cloth drifting through the air. The score asks for a rhythm that is 'not strict, and caressing.'

この曲のほとんどは「全音音階」でできています。ふつうの音階は全音と半音がまざっていますが、全音音階は全部が全音の6つの音だけ。そのため「ここがゴール」という感じがなく、音がずっと宙にういて聞こえます。真ん中のほんの短い部分だけ、ピアノの黒い鍵盤の5つの音(五音音階)に切りかわり、急に風が強くなったように盛り上がります。Most of the piece uses the whole-tone scale. A normal scale mixes whole steps and half steps, but the whole-tone scale has only six notes, all a whole step apart. Because of this, there is no feeling of 'home,' and the music seems to hang in the air. For one short passage in the middle, it switches to the five black-key notes, the pentatonic scale, and swells as if the wind has suddenly picked up.

1910年5月、ドビュッシーは自分で「帆」をふくむ前奏曲4曲を初めて人前で弾きました。題名のフランス語「Voiles」は、「帆」とも「ヴェール(うすい布)」とも読めます。どちらの意味なのかドビュッシーは説明しておらず、今も弾く人によって想像する景色がちがいます。In May 1910, Debussy himself gave the first performance of four preludes, including Voiles. The French title can mean 'sails' or 'veils,' and Debussy never explained which he meant. Even today, each performer imagines a different scene.

This piano piece is soft and floating. The title is a French word. It can mean 'sails' or 'veils.' Nobody knows which one is right! You can hear one low note almost all the time.これはやわらかくて、ふわふわしたピアノ曲です。題名はフランス語です。「帆」とも「ヴェール」とも読めます。どちらが正しいのか、だれにもわかりません!1つの低い音が、ほとんどずっと鳴っています。

聴きどころ Listening Guide

  1. 最初に高いところで2つの声がならんで下りてくる、ふわっとしたメロディーに注目。
Listen to the soft opening melody as two voices drift down together, high up.
  2. 低いところで何度も鳴る1つの音。最後まで消えないか、耳で追いかけてみて。
Follow the single low note that sounds again and again. Does it ever go away?
  3. 真ん中で急に音が流れ出し、風がふいたように盛り上がる短い部分。ここだけ音階が変わります。
In the middle, the notes suddenly rush and swell like a gust of wind. Only here does the scale change.

フランス語の voile は、男性名詞だと「ヴェール」、女性名詞だと「帆」という意味になります。でも題名は複数形の Voiles なので、どちらか見分けられません。日本では「帆」と訳されることが多いですが、ヴェールを使って踊るダンサーを思いうかべたという説もあります。

In French, 'voile' means 'veil' as a masculine noun and 'sail' as a feminine noun. But the title is the plural, Voiles, so you can't tell which. In Japan it is usually translated as 'sails,' but there is also a theory that Debussy was thinking of dancers who used veils.

全音音階は6つの音がすべて同じ間かくで並ぶので、どの音も同じくらい目立ちます。そのため「ドに帰ってきて安心」という感じが生まれません。この曲のように、ほぼ全体を全音音階で書いた曲はとてもめずらしく、全音音階の教科書のような例として紹介されることがあります。

In the whole-tone scale, all six notes are the same distance apart, so no note stands out as home. You never get that safe feeling of 'back to the start.' A piece written almost entirely in this scale is very rare, so Voiles is often used as a textbook example of it.

この曲では、低いシのフラットの音が、ほとんど最初から最後までくり返し鳴らされます。上でメロディーがどんなにゆれても、この音が船の錨(いかり)のように全体をつなぎとめています。ふわふわしているのに、どこか落ち着いて聞こえるひみつです。

A low B-flat is played again and again from almost the beginning to the end. However much the melody drifts above, this note holds everything in place, like a ship's anchor. That is why the music floats and yet sounds calm.

1910年5月25日、パリの独立音楽協会の演奏会で、ドビュッシーは「デルフィの舞姫たち」「帆」「沈める寺」「パックの踊り」の4曲を自分で弾いて初演しました。名ピアニストではありませんでしたが、とても柔らかい音で弾いたと伝えられています。

On 25 May 1910, at a concert in Paris, Debussy himself gave the first performance of four preludes: Dancers of Delphi, Voiles, The Sunken Cathedral and Puck's Dance. He was not a star pianist, but he is said to have played with a very soft touch.
