The Story

Footprints in the Snow is the sixth piece in Debussy's first book of Preludes. As the marking 'sad and slow' tells us, it is very quiet, cold and lonely. A tiny two-note figure repeats again and again, stopping and starting like footprints left in the snow.

Near the beginning, Debussy wrote in the score that this rhythm should sound like the background of a sad, frozen landscape. In other words, the footstep rhythm is not just an accompaniment; it creates the air of the whole snowy field. Above it, a sighing melody sings a few notes at a time.

Book 1 was published in 1910. This piece has almost no fast passages and very few notes, but it is not easy to play, because the pianist must create winter air with the weight of each note and the pedal. Whose footprints they are, and where they lead, is never said. The story is left to each listener.

This piano piece is about snow. It is very slow and very quiet. A short two-note pattern repeats many times. They sound like steps in the snow. The music feels cold and a little sad.

Listening Guide

Listen to the small two-note figure repeating softly at the start. These are the footsteps.
Above it, a melody sighs a few notes at a time. Listen to the silence between the notes, too.
At the end, the sound grows even softer and fades, like footprints disappearing in the snow.

Most score markings are short, like 'slow' or 'soft.' But here Debussy wrote a whole poetic sentence: this rhythm should sound like the background of a sad, frozen landscape. Instead of telling the pianist how loud to play, he describes a scene.

A tiny figure of two neighboring notes repeats through almost the entire piece. It is like walking through the snow, one step and then another. By keeping the same figure, the music suggests an endless white path and cold that never melts.

In the French title, Des pas sur la neige, 'pas' means 'steps' or 'footprints.' But 'pas' is also used every day to mean 'not,' as in 'je ne sais pas' (I don't know). It is one of the first words French learners meet.

Debussy also wrote a snow piece called The Snow Is Dancing in Children's Corner (1908), for his daughter. That one shows snowflakes whirling, as a child might see them from a window. This one feels like walking alone through the snow. The same snow, but a completely different scene.
