Debussy composed this orchestral work between 1903 and 1905 and called it 'three symphonic sketches.' Its three parts, 'From Dawn to Noon on the Sea,' 'Play of the Waves,' and 'Dialogue of the Wind and the Sea,' paint the ever-changing face of the ocean.
Debussy loved the sea so much that he wrote in a letter that he might have become a sailor. Yet much of this piece was written in the French countryside, far from the coast. He also wrote that his memories of the sea meant more to him than the real thing. After finishing the score in March 1905, he corrected the proofs in Eastbourne, a seaside town in England.
It was first performed in Paris in October 1905. Opinions were divided at first, and many people were confused. In time, however, it was recognized as one of the great orchestral works of the 20th century. Debussy's way of layering instrumental colors like paint is said to have influenced many later composers.
This music is about the sea. It has three parts: morning, waves, and wind. Debussy loved the sea. But he wrote most of it far from the sea! A famous Japanese picture of a great wave was on the cover of the first printed score.

The cover of the first edition in 1905 used an image based on the great wave in Katsushika Hokusai's print 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa.' It is said that Debussy himself asked for it. It is a wonderful meeting of Japanese art and French music.
Debussy wrote much of this piece in the countryside of Burgundy, in central France, far from any coast. In a letter, he wrote that he had countless memories of the sea, and that to him they were worth more than the real thing.
It has three parts and can sound like a symphony, but Debussy called it 'symphonic sketches.' The name fits his style, which cares more about changing light and color than about strict forms.
At the premiere, reactions from the audience and critics were mixed. One critic reportedly complained that he could not see, hear, or feel the sea. Today it is a masterpiece, but music that is very new is often hard to understand at first.
