The Story

Jimbo's Lullaby is the second piece in Children's Corner, a piano suite by the French composer Claude Debussy. Debussy wrote the suite for his little daughter, Claude-Emma, nicknamed Chouchou, and it was published in 1908. Jimbo is the name of a toy elephant. A melody that sways heavily in the low notes gently paints a lullaby for a sleepy elephant.

Almost all the titles in Children's Corner are in English (the first one also contains some Latin). It is said this is because Chouchou had an English governess. There is also a theory that 'Jimbo' is Debussy's misspelling of Jumbo, an elephant that was hugely popular in Britain. In the music, you can also hear a bit of the French lullaby 'Dodo, l'enfant do' ('Sleep, child, sleep').

The suite was first performed in Paris in December 1908 by the pianist Harold Bauer. At the beginning of the score, Debussy wrote a playful greeting to Chouchou. Later, the composer André Caplet arranged it for orchestra, and the low instruments paint the heavy-footed elephant even more richly.

This is a piano piece by Debussy. He wrote it for his little daughter. Jimbo is the name of her toy elephant. The music is low and slow. It sounds like a sleepy elephant!

Jumbo, an elephant that was hugely popular in Britain in the 1800s, was later sold to an American circus, and 'jumbo' even became an English word meaning 'huge'. There is a theory that Debussy's 'Jimbo' is a misspelling of 'Jumbo'. Perhaps the English pronunciation sounded that way to a French ear.

The music uses the melody of 'Dodo, l'enfant do', a traditional French lullaby. Many people in France know this familiar song. Debussy quietly wove its melody into the piece.

At the start of the score, Debussy wrote a French instruction meaning 'gently, and a little clumsily'. Usually music asks players to be smooth and beautiful, but here he wants it clumsy on purpose. He wants the pianist to act out a toy elephant waddling with its heavy body.

André Caplet, who arranged Children's Corner for orchestra, was a close friend of Debussy and a composer and conductor. Caplet also made an orchestral version of the famous Clair de lune. Because he knew Debussy's sound so well, he was able to carry the charm of the piano music over to the orchestra.
