The Story

Gardens in the Rain is the third and final piece in Debussy's piano set Estampes (1903). Rapid notes that never stop show raindrops pouring over a garden. At times a strong wind blows, and low notes rumble like thunder. At the end, the music turns to a bright major key, as if the rain has stopped and the sun is coming out.

Hidden in the rain are two children's songs that have long been well known in France. One is the nursery song 'Nous n'irons plus au bois' (We'll go to the woods no more), and the other is the lullaby 'Dodo, l'enfant do.' Their tunes appear in new shapes, mixed in with the sound of the rain, so you may not notice them at first. The garden is said to be one in the town of Orbec in Normandy.

Estampes was first performed in Paris in January 1904 by the pianist Ricardo Viñes. The piece is close to a toccata, a style in which the fingers keep moving rapidly without a break, so it takes both stamina and skill. It is popular at recitals and concerts, and is admired for its vivid picture of rain.

This piano piece is about rain in a garden. The notes are very fast, like raindrops. Two French children's songs are hidden in the music. At the end, the music gets bright, as if the rain stops and the sun comes out. Can you hear the songs?

This piece uses the tunes of the French nursery song 'Nous n'irons plus au bois' and the lullaby 'Dodo, l'enfant do.' For Japanese listeners, it would be like mixing familiar children's songs into the sound of rain. French listeners may suddenly remember their childhood.

Debussy seems to have liked 'Nous n'irons plus au bois' very much. He used it again in 'Rondes de printemps' from his orchestral Images. It was one of his favorite tunes to borrow.

The garden in this piece is said to be one in Orbec, a town in Normandy in northern France. But no place is named in the score, so you can imagine any garden you like.

The piece starts in a darker minor key, but at the end it changes to a bright major key and finishes with strong chords. It's like clouds breaking after a downpour and sunlight pouring in. It can chase away the gloom of a rainy day.
