The Story

This is the first piece of Children's Corner, a set Debussy dedicated to his little daughter, Chouchou. With lots of humor, the music is often heard as a child who starts a finger exercise seriously, slowly gets bored, and then rushes to the end. Anyone who has taken piano lessons will know the feeling!

The title plays on Gradus ad Parnassum, a famous book of piano studies by the composer Muzio Clementi. In Greek myths, Mount Parnassus is the home of the goddesses of the arts, so the Latin title literally means 'steps to Parnassus' and suggests steps toward mastery. Debussy turns those studies into a 'Doctor' and gently pokes fun at them.

Children's Corner was published in 1908 and first performed in Paris at the end of that year. Although the set is about children, it is not easy to play, and pianists around the world still enjoy its charm and depth. The set ends with a bouncy cakewalk whose title names a doll now seen as racist.

This piece sounds like a child practicing the piano. At first, the child seems to play well. Then the music slows down, as if the child is bored and dreaming. At the end, it becomes very fast! Debussy wrote the set for his daughter.

Clementi's Gradus ad Parnassum was a book of studies used by many piano students in the 1800s. Debussy copies the style of those serious exercises, and the music is often heard as a funny picture of how boring practice can feel.

In the middle, the music slows down, as if the child is bored and daydreaming. Then, at the end, it races to the finish, as if the child can't wait to go and play. Anyone who has taken piano lessons will smile!

The title 'Gradus ad Parnassum' was also used for a famous composition textbook by the Austrian musician Johann Joseph Fux in the 1700s. Haydn is said to have studied it. The phrase was a common way to say 'steps to mastery.'

When the set was published, Chouchou was only about three years old, much too young to play it herself. Debussy wrote these pieces as a loving adult's view of children's games and feelings.
