The Story

This is the tenth piece in Debussy's first book of Préludes. It is based on a legend from Brittany, in northwestern France. On clear mornings, the cathedral of the sunken city of Ys slowly rises from the sea. Its bells ring and chants are heard, and then it sinks back beneath the waves. The music paints this dreamlike scene.

The score is marked 'deeply calm.' Low notes suggest the depth of the sea, and repeated notes sound like distant bells. When the cathedral appears, the piano plays huge, heavy chords like a church organ. Debussy also moves chords of the same shape side by side, which recalls medieval church music.

The first book of Préludes was published in 1910. 'The Sunken Cathedral' is one of the grandest pieces in the set, and it still amazes listeners that a single piano can create such a rich sound. It has also been arranged for orchestra, and it shows Debussy's power to tell a story through sound.

This piano music tells an old story. A big church is under the sea. On clear mornings, it rises out of the water. You can hear its bells and singing. Then it slowly goes back down.

Brittany has a legend about Ys, a city swallowed by the sea. A well-known version says the city was lost because of the king's daughter's mistake. Legend also says that on clear days, you can hear its bells ringing under the sea.

In Debussy's own piano-roll recording, he plays some sections about twice as fast as a literal reading of the score suggests. Scholars think the score leaves out how the note values should relate when the meter changes. Pianists today choose different speeds.

When the cathedral rises, very low notes are held while big chords are stacked on top. By using the pedal to keep the sound ringing, a single piano can sound like a huge church organ.

Parts of this piece are written on three staves instead of the usual two. High, middle, and very low sounds are played at the same time, so the layers are written separately to make them easier to read.
