The Story

Arabesque No. 2 is the second of the Two Arabesques, written by the young Debussy. Unlike the famous, gently flowing No. 1, this one is quick, light and bouncy. Swirling patterns and giggling trills, where two notes are played back and forth very fast, run around happily.

The score is marked 'Allegretto scherzando,' meaning 'fairly fast and playfully.' An arabesque is a decorative pattern of curling plants or geometric lines, especially in Islamic art. Debussy turned this visual pattern into music you can enjoy with your ears, with lines of notes that curl and intertwine.

The Two Arabesques were written in 1890–1891 and published by Durand in Paris in 1891. They come from before Debussy became famous, and they sound brighter and easier to follow than his later 'Impressionist' style. Together with No. 1, this piece is still a favorite at piano recitals.

This is a fast and happy piano piece. It sounds like someone laughing. Notes go around and around. It is the second of two Arabesques. The first one is slow, but this one is playful.

Listening Guide

Listen to the quick swirling notes at the start, like curves spinning in a pattern.
Listen for the trills here and there. Do they sound like giggles?

Surprising Facts

No. 1 is calm, flowing and dreamy. No. 2 is quick, bouncy and mischievous. Even with the same title, they are as different as a quiet older sister and a lively younger one. Play them back to back and the contrast is clear.

'Arabesque' is also the name of a ballet pose: standing on one leg with the other leg stretched straight out behind. Whether in patterns, dance or music, the shared image is a beautiful, flowing curve.

Debussy was not the first to use 'Arabesque' as a title for a piano piece. The German composer Schumann wrote an Arabeske in 1839. Debussy took an old title and breathed his own new sound into it.

When it was published in 1891, Debussy was still in his twenties and not yet widely known. His breakthrough work, Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, would not be premiered until three years later, in 1894. This piece, now played all over the world, came into the world very quietly.
