この曲のおはなし The Story

「貴婦人の乗馬」は、ブルグミュラーの「25の練習曲」の最後をかざる25曲目です。はずむようなリズムが、まるで馬が軽やかに駆けていくように聞こえます。日本ではこの題名で親しまれていますが、もとのフランス語の題「ラ・シュヴァルレスク」は「騎士らしい、騎士道的な」という意味です。'La Chevaleresque' is the 25th and final piece in Burgmüller's 25 Easy and Progressive Studies. Its bouncy rhythm sounds like a horse trotting lightly along. In Japan, it is known as 'Kifujin no Joba' ('The Lady's Horse Ride'), but the original French title means 'chivalrous' or 'like a knight'.

曲は、短く切った和音と、はずむリズムで始まります。指の速い動きとともに、スタッカート(音を短く切る弾き方)や、アクセントをはっきりつける練習にもなります。曲集の最後にふさわしく、それまでの24曲で学んだ技をまとめて使う、はなやかでかっこいい1曲です。The piece begins with crisp chords and a bouncing rhythm. It is good practice for fast fingers, staccato (short, detached notes) and clear accents. As the last piece in the book, it brings together the skills from the 24 pieces before it, and it is brilliant and cool.

「25の練習曲」は1851年にパリで出版され、日本ではとくに人気の教材になりました。「貴婦人の乗馬」は、ラストを飾る曲として、ピアノを習う子どもたちのあこがれの1曲です。この曲まで弾けるようになったら、1冊を弾き終えたという大きな達成感が味わえます。25 Studies was published in Paris in 1851 and became an especially popular teaching book in Japan. As the final piece, 'La Chevaleresque' is a dream piece for many young piano students. When you can play this one, you can feel proud that you have finished the whole book.

This is the last piece in a book of 25 piano pieces. The rhythm jumps like a running horse. In Japan, it is called 'The Lady's Horse Ride'. But the French name means 'like a knight'. Many students want to play it.

The original title, 'La Chevaleresque', means 'chivalrous' or 'knightly'. There is no 'lady' and no 'horse ride' in it. The Japanese title probably came from the horse-like rhythm and an elegant image. By the way, the French word for knight, 'chevalier', comes from 'cheval', meaning 'horse'.

「25の練習曲」は、1曲目「すなおな心」のやさしい曲から始まり、おおまかに少しずつ難しくなるように並んでいます。その最後にあるこの曲は、いわば「卒業曲」。速さや強弱、音を短く切る弾き方など、それまで学んだ技がたっぷりつまっています。

25 Studies begins with an easy first piece, 'Candor', and generally gets harder as the book goes on. This final piece is like a 'graduation' piece. It is full of the skills learned along the way, such as speed, loud and soft, and short, detached notes.

「騎士道」とは、中世ヨーロッパの騎士たちが大切にした心がまえのことです。勇気をもつこと、弱い人を守ること、礼儀正しくふるまうことなどです。英語の chivalry(騎士道)や chivalrous(騎士らしい)も、ここからきた言葉です。この曲の堂々としたリズムには、そんな騎士の姿が重なります。

Chivalry was the code that knights in medieval Europe tried to follow. It included being brave, protecting the weak, and behaving politely. The English words 'chivalry' and 'chivalrous' come from this idea. The proud rhythm of this piece brings such a knight to mind.

ドイツのレーゲンスブルクで生まれたブルグミュラーは、1832年ごろパリに移り住み、ピアノの先生として人気を集めました。ピアノを習う子どもたちのために、楽しく弾ける曲をたくさん書いたのです。「25の練習曲」は、そんな教師としての経験から生まれた曲集です。

Burgmüller was born in Regensburg, Germany, and moved to Paris around 1832, where he became a popular piano teacher. He wrote many fun pieces for children learning the piano. 25 Studies grew out of his experience as a teacher.
