Burgmüller was born on 4 December 1806 in Regensburg, in southern Germany. His father was a musician who later became music director of the city of Düsseldorf, and his mother was a pianist and singer. His brother Norbert, four years younger, was also a composer, so it was a very musical family. Few firmly documented details of Friedrich's early training are known.
In 1832, the 26-year-old Burgmüller moved to Paris. Paris was then the capital of music, where Chopin and Liszt also lived. Burgmüller adopted the light, elegant style of playing that Parisians loved, wrote piano pieces for salons — gatherings in the homes of the rich — and became a popular piano teacher.
In 1836 tragedy struck: his brother Norbert, who had planned to join him in Paris, died at just 26. Still, Burgmüller kept composing. In 1841 he wrote the music for the 'Peasant Pas de Deux' in Adolphe Adam's ballet Giselle, and in 1843 he presented his own ballet, La Péri. Both were staged at the Paris Opéra.
The works Burgmüller is best remembered for are his piano studies for young players: 25 Easy and Progressive Studies Op. 100, 12 Studies Op. 105 and 18 Studies Op. 109. He died near Paris on 13 February 1874, aged 67. His name is not widely known in Europe today, but in Japan so many piano students play his 25 Studies that he is familiar to many people who have taken piano lessons.
Burgmüller was born in Germany in 1806. He moved to Paris and taught the piano. He wrote 25 short studies for children. Every piece has a name, like 'Arabesque'. In Japan, many children play them in piano lessons. They are fun to practise!

Burgmüller's name is not well known to the general public in Germany or France. In Japan, however, the 25 Studies are a standard step in piano lessons, and they are used as teaching material even by major music schools. So for many young Japanese pianists, his name is especially familiar.
Most studies just have numbers, but each of the 25 Studies has a title, such as 'La Candeur', 'Arabesque', 'Tarentelle', 'Ballade', 'L'Harmonie des anges', 'L'Hirondelle' ('The Swallow') and 'La Chevaleresque'. Because children can imagine a mood from the title as they play, practising becomes fun.
The music of the famous ballet Giselle is by Adolphe Adam, but the 'Peasant Pas de Deux' in Act 1 was written by Burgmüller. The music was adapted from his own piece 'Souvenirs de Ratisbonne' ('Memories of Regensburg'). It was added for the 1841 premiere and is still often used in performances.
His younger brother Norbert Burgmüller was a gifted composer, highly praised by Mendelssohn and Schumann. When Norbert died in 1836 at only 26, Mendelssohn composed a funeral march for his funeral. For his older brother Friedrich, it was a year of great sorrow.
Burgmüller's studies do not end with the 25. There are also the slightly harder 12 Studies Op. 105 and the more advanced 18 Studies Op. 109. Op. 109 also has charming titles, such as 'Les Perles' ('Pearls') and 'La Fileuse' ('The Spinner').
Burgmüller's ballet La Péri, premiered at the Paris Opéra in 1843, had a story by Théophile Gautier, one of the writers of Giselle, and starred Carlotta Grisi, the ballerina who had danced Giselle. The composer of children's studies was also a figure in the world of ballet.
