The Story

The Tragic Overture is an orchestral work Brahms wrote in 1880. It begins with two powerful chords from the whole orchestra, and dark, stormy, dramatic music follows. It is called an overture, but it is not for an opera or play. It is a concert piece on its own.

Brahms wrote this piece in the summer of 1880 in the Austrian resort town of Bad Ischl, at the same time as the cheerful Academic Festival Overture. He is reported to have said of the pair, "One weeps, the other laughs." Despite its title, it does not tell the story of any particular tragedy. It expresses a tragic mood in music.

It was first performed in Vienna in December 1880 by the Vienna Philharmonic under Hans Richter. It is played less often than the bright Academic Festival Overture, but its solid structure and tight, powerful energy make it an important part of the orchestral repertoire today.

This music is dark and strong. It starts with two loud chords. The composer wrote it with a happy piece at the same time. He said, "One cries, and the other laughs." It does not tell a real story.

In the same summer, Brahms wrote the bright Academic Festival Overture and the dark Tragic Overture. He is reported to have said, "One weeps, the other laughs." They are like twin masks of comedy and tragedy in the theater.

In a letter to his publisher Simrock, Brahms wrote that his melancholy nature could not resist the pleasure of writing an overture for a tragedy. However, he named no particular play or story. The title describes the tragic mood itself.

The first performance was in December 1880 by the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Hans Richter. Richter also conducted the premieres of Brahms's Second and Third Symphonies. He played a big part in bringing Brahms's music to Vienna audiences.

People often say that opening with two hammering chords recalls the start of Beethoven's Third Symphony, the Eroica. It is a strong beginning, very fitting for Brahms, who deeply admired Beethoven.
