The Story

Hungarian Dance No. 6 is one of the Hungarian Dances that Brahms wrote for piano duet. It appears in the second book, published in 1869. It is bright and cheerful, and its special feature is the way the tempo stretches and shrinks: it slows down, then suddenly speeds up. It is like a mischievous child running a race.

This flexible tempo reflects the playing style of Hungarian Roma musicians, which Brahms loved as a young man. In their performances, the tempo was often pushed and pulled to match the mood, rather than kept strictly even. Brahms wrote that fun into the music in detail.

The original piano version is in D-flat major, but orchestras usually play a version in D major. It was arranged not by Brahms but by Albert Parlow in 1876. Along with No. 5, it is one of the most popular dances, and it is often played as a concert encore.

This is a happy dance in the Hungarian style. Sometimes it goes slowly, and then suddenly it goes very fast! It is like a game of tag. The first version was for two people at one piano. Today orchestras love to play it, too.

Brahms made his own orchestral versions of only Nos. 1, 3 and 10. The well-known orchestral version of No. 6 was arranged by Albert Parlow in 1876, and he moved it up a half step, to D major.

Many of the Hungarian Dances are based on popular tunes of the time. The composer Béla Kéler is said to have claimed that Nos. 5 and 6 came from his own pieces. For No. 6, however, there are other theories, and the source is not clear.

The Hungarian csárdás has two parts: a slow 'lassú' and a fast 'friss'. You could say the sudden tempo changes in No. 6 pack this back-and-forth between slow and fast into a very short time.

How much to stretch the tempo cannot be fully fixed by the score, so much is left to the taste of the conductor or players. Some hold back for a long time, while others keep it light and quick. Every performance sounds different, which makes it fun to compare recordings.
