The Hungarian Dances are a set of 21 dances by Brahms, and No. 5 is the most famous. They were first written for piano four hands, which means two players at one piano. Books 1 and 2, with Nos. 1 to 10, were published in 1869. The music keeps slowing down and speeding up, which makes it very dramatic.
When Brahms was young, he went on a concert tour with the Hungarian violinist Ede Reményi. Through him, Brahms came to love the Hungarian-style music played by Roma bands. The Hungarian Dances are arrangements of melodies like these. The main opening tune of No. 5 is said to come not from a folk song but from a csárdás by the composer Béla Kéler.
The Hungarian Dances were a huge hit and became some of Brahms's best-selling works. Brahms himself arranged only Nos. 1, 3 and 10 for orchestra. The orchestral version of No. 5 that we usually hear was made by other musicians. It is still a favorite encore all over the world.
This is a fast and exciting dance. Two people play it on one piano. Sometimes the music is slow, and then it is very fast. The composer did not write the main tune himself. He made it into a new piece.

The Hungarian Dances have no opus number, because Brahms published them as arrangements, not as his own original works. Even so, the composer Béla Kéler later complained that his own music had been used in No. 5.
The main opening tune of No. 5 is said to come from a csárdás called "Memories of Bártfa" by Béla Kéler. A well-known story says that Brahms believed it was a folk song with no known composer.
In Charlie Chaplin's film The Great Dictator (1940), a barber shaves a customer in perfect time with Hungarian Dance No. 5 playing on the radio. The scene is one of the funniest moments in film history.
In the 1800s, playing piano duets at home was a very popular hobby. The sheet music for the Hungarian Dances sold extremely well and is said to have earned Brahms a lot of money. These dances made him famous even before his symphonies did.
