The Story

The Toreador Song is sung in Act 2 of Carmen when Escamillo, a star bullfighter, makes his entrance. Answering a toast from the people in a tavern, he proudly describes his fights in the bullring. The strong refrain, "Toreador, on guard!", which everyone sings together, is especially famous.

Escamillo is the man who wins Carmen's heart and becomes the rival of the soldier Don José. The song is for a low male voice, a bass-baritone. It begins almost like speech, and then the refrain grows grand, like a march. You can hear how confident he is just from the music.

Since the premiere in 1875, this has been one of the best-loved songs in opera, and the tune of its refrain also appears in the Prelude and in the suite movement "Les Toréadors." There is a story that Bizet did not like the song very much. Ironically, it is now one of the most famous pieces in Carmen.

This song is sung by a famous bullfighter. He talks about his fights with bulls. He is very proud of himself! Everyone sings, "Toreador, on guard!" The tune is also in the opera's opening music.

There is a story that Bizet said something like, "If they want rubbish, they can have it," about this song. No one can prove he really said it, but whatever he thought, the song became hugely popular.

In Spain, bullfighters are usually called "torero" or "matador." "Toreador" is an old word that is said to be rarely used there. One theory says it was chosen because it fits the rhythm of the music well.

The tune of this song's refrain is already played in the Prelude, before the curtain rises. The audience hears Escamillo's theme without knowing it, and when he finally appears in Act 2, they recognize it.

This song uses a wide range, from low notes to high notes, so it is quite hard to sing. To sound cool and heroic, a singer needs both power in the low notes and brightness in the high ones.
