The Story

Jeux d'enfants" ("Children's Games") is a set of 12 short pieces for piano duet, with two players at one piano, written by Bizet in 1871. Each piece is named after a children's game, such as "The Swing," "The Spinning Top," "The Doll," "The Wooden Horses," "Soap Bubbles" and "Blind Man's Buff." In each short piece, the game comes to life.

In "The Spinning Top," quick notes keep turning round and round. In "The Doll," a gentle melody flows like a lullaby. In "Trumpet and Drum," you can hear children playing soldiers. That year, France was in turmoil after the Franco-Prussian War, but these pieces are full of warm feelings for childhood.

Bizet sold the set to the publisher Durand, and he chose five pieces and arranged them for orchestra as the "Petite Suite." It also became popular at concerts. This picture of a child's world is said to be a forerunner of later works about childhood by Debussy, Fauré and Ravel. It has also been danced as a ballet.

Two people play this music on one piano. There are 12 short pieces. Each piece is a children's game: a swing, a top, a doll and soap bubbles! You can hear the top spin round and round. It is fun for children and adults.2人で1台のピアノをひいて演奏する音楽です。

In a piano duet, two people sit side by side at one piano, one on the high side and one on the low side. In the 19th century, when many families played the piano at home, duet music was very popular. This set is also music to enjoy with family and friends.

The melody of "Trumpet and Drum" comes from a march in Act 5 of Bizet's opera "Ivan IV," which was never staged in his lifetime. Music that had no chance to be heard was reborn as a children's game of soldiers.

The set first had ten pieces. Later, "Soap Bubbles" and "Puss in the Corner" were added, making twelve. Most are short, only a minute or two, and each one seems to capture the most fun moment of a game.

In 1932, the choreographer Léonide Massine made a ballet from this set, with stage designs by the painter Joan Miró. George Balanchine also made a ballet to it in 1955. A set of small piano pieces spread into the worlds of painting and dance.
