The Prelude to Carmen is the orchestral music played before the curtain rises on Bizet's opera. It begins with bright, noisy music from the bullring, with crashing cymbals, and takes listeners straight into a Spanish festival. In Japan, it is also called the Carmen Overture and is very well known.
The Prelude is packed with important tunes from the opera. The bright opening music comes from the bullring scene in Act 4, and the grand melody that follows is from the Toreador Song. Then, at the end, a dark "fate motif" appears, growling in the low strings, warning of Carmen's tragic end. The music stops suddenly without resolving, and the curtain rises.
The 1875 premiere received mixed reviews, partly because the story was so bold. Bizet died three months later, at just 36. But after a successful production in Vienna that same year, Carmen spread around the world, and today it is one of the most performed operas. The Prelude is also very popular on its own, in concerts and even at school sports days.
This is the music before the opera starts. It is fast, loud and happy, like a festival. Then the music becomes dark and scary. It tells us that something sad will happen. The composer died three months after the first show.

Carmen opened on March 3, 1875. Exactly three months later, on June 3, Bizet died at the age of 36. He never knew that his work would become one of the most famous operas in the world.
Tchaikovsky was deeply moved by Carmen. In a letter to his patron, Nadezhda von Meck, he wrote that in ten years it would be the most popular opera in the world. Carmen later became one of the most often performed operas in the world.
The Opéra-Comique, where Carmen opened, was a family theater; it is said families even used it as a place to arrange marriages. A story about a wild, free woman who works in a cigarette factory and is killed on stage at the end was a real shock to audiences at the time.
The first half of the Prelude is bright festival music, and the second half is the dark fate motif. With these two opposite faces, the piece sums up the whole story of Carmen, where love and death stand side by side, in just a few minutes.
