The Story

String Quartet No. 6 is a piece for four players: two violins, a viola and a cello. It is the last of the six string quartets Beethoven first published as Op. 18. It was also the last of the six to be composed, and he wrote it in 1800. Haydn and Mozart had already written great string quartets, so this was a big challenge for Beethoven.

The first movement is bright and bouncy, the second is a calm song, and the third is a playful scherzo whose rhythm seems to trip over itself on purpose. The fourth movement opens with a slow section called 'La Malinconia' (Melancholy). In the score, Beethoven wrote in Italian that it must be played with the greatest delicacy.

After this gloomy section, the music suddenly turns into a fast, cheerful dance in the style of a German country dance. But the melancholy comes back for a moment, so light and dark take turns. The six quartets of Op. 18 were published in 1801 and dedicated to Beethoven's patron, Prince Lobkowitz.

This piece is for four string players. Most of it is bright and happy. But in the last part, a slow, sad section comes in. Its name is 'Melancholy'. Then the happy dance and the sad music take turns.

It was unusual for Beethoven to give a section a title like this. In 'La Malinconia', the harmony wanders unsteadily, as if not knowing where to go. Some people feel it looks ahead to the deep works of his last years.

In the scherzo, strong accents fall off the beat, so it sounds as if the music is tripping over its own feet. This trick, called syncopation, makes it hard to tell where the beat is, and it can make you smile. It shows Beethoven's sense of humor.

When Beethoven was writing Op. 18, his former teacher Haydn was famous as a master of the string quartet. Beethoven carefully studied the quartets of Haydn and Mozart and revised his own many times. We know, for example, that he heavily revised Quartet No. 1 after giving an early version to a friend.

The six quartets of Op. 18 were not written in numbered order. Research suggests that No. 3 was written first. No. 6 was one of the last, and it is full of new ideas, a fitting end to the set.
