The Story

The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I, is a collection of preludes and fugues, one pair in each of the 24 major and minor keys. Bach finished it in 1722. This Prelude and Fugue No. 2 in C minor comes right after the famous No. 1 in C major. In the prelude, both hands repeat the same quick pattern again and again, running on like a machine.

In those days, some keys could sound unpleasant on keyboard instruments, depending on how they were tuned. This collection showed that music could be played in all 24 major and minor keys, but we do not know exactly which tuning Bach had in mind. An early form of this prelude also appears in a music notebook that Bach started in 1720 for his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann.

The fugue that follows has three voices, or melodic lines. Its short, bouncing theme appears again and again in different voices, weaving together. The Well-Tempered Clavier was not printed in Bach's lifetime, but it spread through handwritten copies, and we know that the young Beethoven played it. Today it is still an important piece for piano students, and it is often played at recitals and exams.

This piece has two parts: a prelude and a fugue. In the prelude, the notes run fast and never stop. It sounds like a busy little machine. At the end, it suddenly changes speed. The young Beethoven played music from this book, too!

After running in the same rhythm for so long, the prelude suddenly turns 'Presto' (very fast) near the end. Then it pauses with an 'Adagio' (slow) and finishes 'Allegro' (fast). The speed changes three times in a short space, like a little drama. It feels free, almost like an improvisation.

In 1720, Bach began a keyboard notebook for his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann, who was nine years old. Along with fingering exercises and short pieces, it contains early versions of several preludes that later went into the Well-Tempered Clavier, including this one in C minor. A father's homemade textbook was the cradle of a masterpiece.

In 1783, Beethoven's teacher, Christian Gottlob Neefe, wrote in a music magazine that the boy mainly played Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. At that time, the collection had not yet been printed and circulated among musicians in handwritten copies. A 12-year-old who could play it was truly remarkable.

Book I was finished in 1722, but the first printed editions did not appear until around 1801, about 80 years later. Until then, musicians copied it out by hand, piece by piece, and passed it on. The fact that it survived shows how much people treasured it.
