Sleepers, Wake!' is a church cantata that Bach first performed in Leipzig in 1731. It is based on the Bible parable of the ten virgins. At midnight, watchmen announce that the bridegroom, a symbol of Christ, is coming, and the young women who kept their lamps ready go out to meet him.
The cantata is built on a hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai, published in 1599. The hymn was so famous that it was called the 'King of Chorales.' In the fourth movement especially, the tenors sing the hymn tune slowly while the violins and violas play together a light, dancing melody.
Bach later arranged this fourth movement for organ and published it as the first of the Schübler Chorales (BWV 645), and the organ version is very popular today. The Sunday this cantata was written for, the 27th Sunday after Trinity, only happens when Easter comes very early. During Bach's years in Leipzig, it came only twice.
This is church music for a choir and an orchestra. In the story, it is night and everyone is sleeping. Watchmen call, 'Wake up! He is coming!' The most famous part has a beautiful, dancing melody. Bach also made it into an organ piece.

This cantata was written for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. That Sunday only comes in years when Easter is very early. In Bach's 27 years in Leipzig, it is thought that this Sunday came only twice, in 1731 and 1742.
This cantata has two duets in which the soprano, as the Soul, and the bass, as Jesus, sing to each other. They call 'Come!' and 'I am coming!' like lovers in an opera duet. Through the image of bride and bridegroom, the music shows the bond between God and people.
Bach published only a small number of works in his lifetime. The organ version of the fourth movement appears in the Schübler Chorales, published around 1748. Since he chose it for one of his few publications, Bach himself probably liked this music very much.
Philipp Nicolai, who wrote the original hymn, was a pastor in a German town. It is said that he wrote it at a time when a deadly disease was spreading and many people died. A song that imagined the joy of heaven in a time of sorrow became, more than 130 years later, a masterpiece by Bach.
