The Magnificat is Bach's setting of the Song of Mary from the Bible, in which Mary rejoices that she will give birth to Jesus. The words are in Latin and begin, 'My soul magnifies the Lord.' It is a bright and splendid work for a five-part choir, soloists and an orchestra with trumpets and timpani.
In 1723, Bach became the Thomaskantor, director of music at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, and that year he wrote the first version, in E-flat major. Recent research suggests that it was first performed on a church feast day on July 2, and that four Christmas songs were added for a performance at Christmas. Around 1733, Bach rewrote it in D major and took out the Christmas songs. The D major version is the one usually performed today.
The work has twelve movements, but they are all short, so you can enjoy it in one go. It is full of ways of painting the words in sound. For example, after the soprano sings quietly, the choir bursts in with 'all generations'. At the end, at the words 'as it was in the beginning', the music of the opening returns, bringing the work to a shining close.
This is a happy song for a choir and orchestra. The words come from the Bible. Mary sings about her joy. You can hear trumpets and drums. Bach wrote the first version in 1723. At Christmas, it was performed with four extra songs.

In the third movement, the soprano sings that the Lord has noticed her, and that from now on people will call her blessed. Then, at the words 'all generations', the choir suddenly bursts in. The five voices pile up again and again, so it really sounds like crowds of people rushing in.
For the Christmas performance in 1723, four Christmas songs in German and Latin were inserted into the first version, in E-flat major. One of them, 'From heaven above I come', recalls the angel bringing the shepherds news of the Savior's birth. Even today, this E-flat major version is sometimes performed at Christmas concerts.
The D major version uses three trumpets and timpani. D major was a key in which the trumpets of Bach's time sounded especially brilliant, so it was often used for festive music. In the first and last movements, the trumpets ring out, filling the church with a festival mood.
In the alto aria 'He has filled the hungry with good things', the recorders of the first version became two flutes in the D major version. The words end, 'and the rich he has sent away empty.' At the very end, the flutes drop out and only the bass is left, a witty musical joke.
