The Story

Keyboard Concerto No. 1 in D minor is a concerto for solo harpsichord and strings. Around 1738, Bach wrote out a set of seven harpsichord concertos, plus the beginning of an eighth, and this one comes first. It opens with a powerful unison, with the orchestra and harpsichord playing the same melody, and the music is intense and dramatic.

In Leipzig, Bach probably rearranged earlier concertos for harpsichord, for example for concerts at the coffee house. Many scholars believe this one was originally a violin concerto that is now lost. The harpsichord part still has figures that seem to be shaped for the strings of a violin. Turning the harpsichord from an accompanist into the star was a new idea.

Bach also used this music in cantatas. In Cantata No. 146, the first and second movements appear with a solo organ, and in Cantata No. 188, the third movement does. From the 19th century on, the concerto was often played on the piano. Bach's harpsichord concertos are important early works in the history of the keyboard concerto.

This is a concerto for a keyboard and strings. It starts with a strong and dark melody. Everyone plays the same notes together. In Bach's time, the keyboard usually helped other players. In this piece, the keyboard is the star!

In Cantata No. 146, 'We must pass through great sorrow', a whole choir is added on top of the slow second movement of this concerto. The organ plays the solo melody, while the choir sings that we must pass through many troubles to enter the kingdom of God. The same music is reborn in a completely new form.

No score survives of the violin concerto that many scholars believe was the model for this work. So musicians have tried to 'reconstruct' it as a violin concerto by working backward from the harpsichord version, and these versions have been recorded. But no one can know for sure what the original looked like, or even whether it was really for violin.

Concertos with a harpsichord or organ as the soloist were still new in Bach's time. Around the same years, Handel was winning fans in London by playing his own organ concertos. These works belong to the early history of the keyboard concerto, a genre that Mozart and Beethoven later developed in new ways.

In 1957, the Canadian pianist Glenn Gould recorded this concerto with the conductor Leonard Bernstein. He played it not on a harpsichord but on a modern piano, with clear, even notes. The recording is still well known as a famous example of this concerto played on the piano.
