The Italian Concerto is a 'concerto' for one harpsichord. Usually a concerto has a solo instrument and an orchestra taking turns. Here, a single player uses the two keyboards of the harpsichord to create the contrast between loud sounds, like the orchestra, and soft sounds, like the soloist. It has three movements: fast, slow, fast.
In 1735, Bach published the second part of his Clavier-Übung, a collection of keyboard music, pairing the Italian Concerto with the French Overture. He was showing the two popular styles of the time, Italian and French, side by side. As a young man, Bach had studied Italian concertos, such as those by Vivaldi, by arranging them for keyboard, and that experience shines in this piece.
The piece was admired even in Bach's time. The critic Scheibe, who had attacked Bach's music in 1737 as too complicated, is said to have later praised this work as a perfect model of a concerto. Today it is played on the piano as well as the harpsichord, and it is a favorite at recitals and competitions.
This is a concerto for one keyboard. Usually a concerto needs an orchestra. But here, one player does everything! The music sounds bright and sunny, like Italy. But Bach never went to Italy.

Handel, from the same generation, trained in Italy as a young man, but Bach hardly ever left the German lands. Still, he copied and arranged the Italian scores he could find and made the style his own. You could call this piece the result of studying in Italy through sheet music.
In 1737, the critic Johann Adolph Scheibe started a debate by writing that Bach's music was artificial and too complicated. Yet it is said that Scheibe later praised the Italian Concerto as a perfect model of a solo concerto. That is how impressive it was.
Keyboard music of that time rarely had loud and soft markings. But this piece has 'forte' (loud) and 'piano' (soft) markings, showing how to use the two keyboards. It is Bach's clever way to show orchestra and soloist taking turns on one instrument.
In the 1710s, while working in Weimar, Bach arranged concertos by Vivaldi and other Italian composers for solo harpsichord or organ. This is how he learned the fast-slow-fast form and the way soloist and ensemble take turns. The Italian Concerto is the crowning result.
