Erbarme dich, mein Gott' ('Have mercy, my God') is an alto aria from Bach's St Matthew Passion. The Passion is a huge work based on the Gospel of Matthew. It tells the story from the events leading up to Jesus's arrest through his death and burial, and it was probably first performed in Leipzig on Good Friday, 1727. This aria is known as one of its most beautiful moments.
Just before this aria, Jesus's disciple Peter lies three times, saying he does not know him. Then a rooster crows, Peter remembers what Jesus had told him, and he weeps bitterly. The aria expresses his tears and regret. A solo violin plays a beautiful melody that seems to sob, and the alto prays, 'Have mercy, my God, for the sake of my tears.'
After Bach's death, the St Matthew Passion was hardly performed for a long time. In 1829, the 20-year-old Felix Mendelssohn conducted it in Berlin, and it caused a sensation. This helped spark a new interest in Bach's music. Today 'Erbarme dich' is often sung on its own, and it has been used in films.
This is a sad and beautiful song. A man named Peter says, 'I don't know Jesus.' Later, he is very sorry, and he cries. A violin and a singer share his sadness. It is one of the best-known songs in the St Matthew Passion.

For a long time, the St Matthew Passion was thought to have been first performed in 1729. That is why Mendelssohn's 1829 revival was said to come 'exactly 100 years later'. But later research made it likely that it had already been performed on Good Friday in 1727.
The St Matthew Passion is written for two choirs and two orchestras. The two groups, placed on the left and right, ask and answer each other. In 'Erbarme dich', a violinist from the first orchestra plays the important solo part.
The Sacrifice (1986), the last film by the Soviet-born director Andrei Tarkovsky, opens with this aria. The music plays quietly over Leonardo da Vinci's painting The Adoration of the Magi, and it returns at the end of the film.
In the 1829 revival, Mendelssohn cut parts of the work to suit the audience of his time. It was a huge success and was soon performed again. There is also a story that Mendelssohn got the score because his grandmother gave him a handwritten copy as a Christmas present.
