The Coffee Cantata is a comic secular cantata, a vocal work not meant for church, that Bach probably wrote around 1734. The characters are Lieschen, a young woman who loves coffee, her stubborn father Schlendrian, who wants her to quit, and a narrator. Like a little opera, the story moves forward through singing.
In Leipzig at that time, coffee houses were hugely popular. But some people thought coffee was unhealthy, or that young women should not drink it. Most of the words were written by the poet Picander, who often worked with Bach. The daughter sings that coffee is 'lovelier than a thousand kisses', and the father threatens that she will never marry unless she quits. She finally promises to stop, but...
At the end, the narrator reveals the twist. The daughter secretly lets it be known that any man who wants to marry her must promise to let her drink coffee whenever she likes. (No one knows who wrote the words of these last two movements.) This work was probably performed by Bach's Collegium Musicum at Zimmermann's coffee house. If so, it was the perfect setting for its coffee joke.
This is a funny story with music. A girl loves coffee very much. Her father says, 'Stop drinking coffee!' She says yes, but she has a secret plan. Her husband must let her drink coffee!

Picander's published text ended with the daughter looking forward to her wedding. The final narration and trio, with the secret coffee clause in the marriage deal, are not in the printed text. Nobody knows who added them, but this twist makes the work much more fun.
At Zimmermann's coffee house, the Collegium Musicum gave concerts almost every week. It is said that they played inside in winter and in a garden outside the city walls in summer. Bach led the group from 1729 and performed many works by himself and by other composers.
In the daughter's aria about how sweet coffee tastes, a flute dances along with her. She praises coffee as 'lovelier than a thousand kisses, smoother than muscat wine', which is wonderfully over the top. Other arias, like the father's grumbling, show the characters' personalities clearly.
The father's name, Schlendrian, is a German word meaning something like 'the same old sloppy routine'. Even his name pokes fun at him as stubborn and old-fashioned. The daughter's name, Lieschen, is a pet form of Elisabeth.
