The Brandenburg Concertos are six concertos that Bach dedicated in 1721 to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg. In No. 5 in D major, a flute, a violin and a harpsichord are the soloists, supported by strings. The harpsichord gradually becomes the star, and the piece is often called an early ancestor of the piano concerto.
In those days, the harpsichord usually supported the music from below with bass notes and chords. But near the end of the first movement in this piece, all the other instruments stop, and the harpsichord plays a long solo. In 1719, Bach had gone to Berlin to pick up a new harpsichord for the court in Köthen. Some think he wrote this piece to show off that instrument, and his own skill as a player.
There is no record that the Margrave ever had these concertos performed. The score passed through several hands and was not published until 1850. In the 20th century, the six Brandenburg Concertos became known around the world as masterpieces of Baroque music. No. 5 is loved as the concerto where the harpsichord player shines the most.
In this piece, three instruments play solos: a flute, a violin, and a harpsichord. At first, the harpsichord helps the others. Then, suddenly, everyone else stops. The harpsichord plays alone for a long time! This was a very unusual idea at the time.

An early version of No. 5 (BWV 1050a), thought to come before the dedication copy, has survived. In that version, the harpsichord solo in the first movement is much shorter. Bach greatly expanded it for the dedication copy. We can see how he kept revising it and making it more dazzling.
Each of the six Brandenburg Concertos uses a different set of solo instruments. No. 2 has trumpet and recorder, No. 3 uses only strings, and No. 5 has flute, violin and harpsichord. Bach himself gave the score a French title meaning 'Six Concertos with Several Instruments'.
The court in Köthen had excellent musicians. Many scholars think that Bach, who was famous as a keyboard player, played the harpsichord part himself. However, there is no record of who first performed it.
In the second movement, the orchestra rests. Only the flute, violin and harpsichord play, like gentle chamber music. It is as if a little trio is hiding inside the concerto. The key changes to B minor, making a lovely contrast with the bright movements on either side.
