The Brandenburg Concertos are a set of six concertos that Bach put together, and No. 3 is the third. It is written for three violins, three violas and three cellos, plus a bass accompaniment. There is no fixed soloist. Everyone takes turns being the star or the support as the music races cheerfully along.
In 1721, Bach made a beautiful clean copy of the six concertos and dedicated them to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg. About two years earlier, Bach had played for him in Berlin, and the margrave had asked him to send some music. The title page, in French, says 'Six Concertos for Several Instruments.' The name 'Brandenburg Concertos' was given in the 19th century.
No record has been found that the margrave ever had the music performed. After his death the score passed to other owners and later ended up in a library. It became widely known only after it was published in 1850. Bach himself later reused the first movement of No. 3, adding horns and oboes, as the opening sinfonia of a church cantata.
This piece is for string instruments. There are three violins, three violas, and three cellos. Everyone plays an important part. Bach gave the music to a nobleman in 1721. But it may never have been played at the nobleman's court!

Three violins, three violas and three cellos make three groups of three — a perfect fit for Concerto No. 3. Some people think it stands for the Christian Trinity, but Bach never wrote that down. The players join together and split apart to create a rich sound.
Between the fast first and third movements, the second movement has only two chords written in the score. So performers often add a short improvisation or even a slow movement from another Bach piece. Each performance is different, so it is exciting to hear what happens.
There is a theory that Bach made this beautiful copy because he was looking for a new job. In fact, he moved to Leipzig in 1723. But there is no record of any job offer from the margrave, and his real purpose is not clear.
Bach often reused music he liked. The first movement of No. 3 became the opening of Cantata No. 174 in 1729. This time he added two horns, three oboes and more to the strings, making the sound even more brilliant. The same music feels quite different.
