Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F major is one of the six concertos Bach dedicated in 1721. It has four soloists: trumpet, recorder, oboe and violin. These brass, woodwind and string instruments make sound in completely different ways, yet they trade melodies in about the same high range. It is a very bold combination.
The trumpet part is especially famous. Trumpets at that time had no valves, so the player had to reach very high notes using only the lips. Even today, this part is said to be one of the hardest in the trumpet repertoire. In the second movement, however, the trumpet rests, and the recorder, oboe and violin sing quietly.
In 1977, NASA launched the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes, each carrying a golden record of sounds and music from Earth. The first piece of music on the record is the first movement of this concerto. Today, trumpeters often play it on a piccolo trumpet, a small trumpet that makes high notes easier, and the results are thrilling.
This piece has four solo instruments. One of them is a trumpet. The trumpet plays very, very high notes. It is very hard to play! This music is also on a golden record in space.

Voyager's golden record was made so that intelligent life somewhere in space could learn about Earth if they found it. Along with greetings and natural sounds, it holds music from around the world. Two more pieces by Bach were also chosen, making him the composer with the most pieces on the record.
This trumpet part stays much higher than usual. On the old valveless trumpet, players used the fact that the available notes get closer together as you go higher, which let them play melodies up there. Even so, it is extremely hard, and it is known as a part that many great players have struggled with.
The trumpet is loud, and the recorder is very soft. Because they pass the same melodies back and forth, players must be very careful about balance. In the 20th century, the recorder part was often played on a flute instead, but today more groups use period instruments and find other ways to balance them.
In his dedication letter, Bach wrote that when he had played for the Margrave a few years earlier, he was asked to send some of his works. This was probably during his visit to Berlin in 1719. The name 'Brandenburg Concertos' was not Bach's. It was first used by the 19th-century biographer Philipp Spitta.
