The Story

This Tango is the second piece in España, a set of six 'album leaves' for piano by the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz. It is in D major, and a sweet melody sings over a slow, lazy, swaying rhythm. It is short, but it is one of Albéniz's best-known piano pieces.

España was published in 1890, when Albéniz was working mostly in London. The 'tango' here is not the fiery Argentine tango. It is a slower dance, close to the habanera, which came to Spain from Cuba. Its special 'dum, da-dum, dum' rhythm brings a warm southern breeze.

Later, the pianist Leopold Godowsky made a richer piano version, and the violinist Fritz Kreisler arranged it for violin, so it became loved around the world. Albéniz never wrote for the guitar himself, but this piece is often played on guitar and is now an important part of the guitar repertoire.

This is a short piano piece from Spain. It is called Tango, but it is not like the tango from Argentina. It is slow and sweet. The rhythm sways like a warm wind. Many guitar players also love it.

When you hear 'tango', you may think of the passionate dance from Argentina. But around 1890, when this piece was published, the Argentine tango had not yet spread around the world. The tango here is a slower dance with a habanera-like rhythm, popular in Spain and Cuba.

The great pianist Leopold Godowsky made an arrangement full of extra chords and decorations. It sounds rich and luxurious, quite different from the simple charm of the original. It is fun to compare the two versions.

Albéniz never wrote a single piece for the guitar. But many of his piano pieces sound like guitar music, and players such as Tárrega and Llobet arranged them for guitar. Today, he is one of the most important composers for guitarists.

There is a famous story that Albéniz secretly got on a ship to South America at age 12. But this is now thought to be a myth. In fact, he toured as a child with his father. Some say Albéniz himself helped spread the story.
