It means expressing your thoughts or vague feelings in clear words. It used to be a formal, academic word. Now it is used in everyday conversation because social media gives people more chances to express their opinions and feelings.

English
"Gengoka" used to be a stiff word found in academic papers. In the 2020s, it began appearing much more in newspapers, and "I can't quite put it into words" became a common phrase on social media. In December 2024, it won Sanseido's "New Word of the Year 2024."
English
Books fueled the boom. Kaho Miyake's guide to putting what you love into words, published in July 2024, sold over 300,000 copies, according to its publisher. Many other books with "gengoka" in the title followed. At work and in job hunting, people are often asked to verbalize their ideas.
English
The trend continued in 2026, and the word was nominated for the Buzzword of the Year Award. At the same time, some people say the pressure to put everything into words is tiring. The idea that it's okay to hold on to feelings you can't yet explain is also gaining support.
