元ネタ・なぜ流行った？
manspreading（男性が脚を大きく広げて座ること）は2010年代に広まった語。それをまねて、車の大型化を言うのが carspreading です。ヨーロッパの環境団体 T&E（Transport & Environment）が2026年6月に出した分析では、ヨーロッパの新車は2000年から毎年平均約1.2cmずつ長くなり、幅と高さも毎年約0.5cmずつ増えてきたとされます。

Manspreading became a common word in the 2010s, and carspreading copies it. A June 2026 analysis by the group T&E found that new cars in Europe have grown about 1.2 cm longer every year since 2000.

Collins put it on its 2026 shortlist, noting that SUVs made up well over half of new car sales in 2025. T&E warned that, compared with a right-sizing scenario, the trend could cut cities' on-street parking capacity by up to 14% by 2040 and cause more deaths among people walking and cycling.
日本でも、古い機械式駐車場に入らない大きな車が増えたことが話題になります。英語では the trend toward bigger cars とふつうに言うこともできます。イギリスの新聞では、大きな車に囲まれて自分の車が小さく見えることを、今年の言葉 mogging とかけて car mogged と表した例もありました。大型化の対策として、車の大きさに応じて駐車料金を変えるべきだという意見も出ています。
