Should space agencies select people such as teachers and artists as astronauts, not only scientists and pilots?

Although the idea sounds attractive, I do not think space agencies should choose teachers or artists as astronauts. First, a space mission is an extremely demanding job. Astronauts must repair equipment, perform scientific experiments, and respond calmly to emergencies such as fires or air leaks. These tasks require advanced technical knowledge and years of training, so seats on government missions should go to people with the right skills. Second, teachers and artists can share the wonder of space without flying. Astronauts already hold live lessons for students from the International Space Station, and artists on the ground can create works inspired by real space images. In this way, many people can be involved while the crew stays focused on safety. If private companies want to fly people from other backgrounds, that is a different matter. However, national space agencies should continue to select highly trained professionals.

I do not think teachers and artists should become astronauts. First, astronauts have a very hard job. They must fix machines and do experiments, so they need special skills and long training. Second, teachers and artists can help from Earth. Astronauts already teach lessons from space, and artists can make pictures of space. So space agencies should choose experts who are trained for the job.

  • Teachers and artists could describe the experience of space in ways that ordinary people understand and feel more deeply.
  • Choosing astronauts from various jobs would show children that space is open to everyone, not only to scientists.
