The space elevator is a fascinating idea, but I doubt that it will be a realistic way to reach space in the foreseeable future. The main problem is materials. The cable would have to stretch tens of thousands of kilometers, from the ground to beyond the orbit of weather satellites, and it would need to be both extremely light and extremely strong. Scientists have studied materials such as carbon nanotubes, but so far they can only produce them in very short lengths. Without a major breakthrough in materials science, the elevator simply cannot be built. Another problem is safety. A cable that long would be exposed to space debris, lightning and strong winds. If it were cut, the falling cable could cause great damage, and repairing it would be extremely difficult. Meanwhile, reusable rockets are steadily making space travel cheaper. For these reasons, I believe rockets will remain the main way to reach space for a long time.
