Can life-support technology from space stations help build a sustainable society on Earth?

I am confident that life-support technology developed for space stations can help us build a more sustainable society. To begin with, space stations are models of recycling. On the International Space Station, astronauts recycle almost all of their water, including sweat and even urine, into clean drinking water. Similar purification technology could help regions that suffer from water shortages, as well as communities hit by disasters where clean water suddenly becomes unavailable. Additionally, life in space teaches us how to live with limited resources. In orbit, every drop of water, every breath of air and every kilogram of food must be carefully managed, because supplies from Earth are expensive and slow to arrive. Our planet is also a closed system with limited resources, although we often forget this. Learning from the careful habits of astronauts could change the way we use energy and materials. For these reasons, space-station technology offers valuable lessons for Earth.

Yes, I think space station technology can help the Earth. First, on the space station, astronauts clean and reuse almost all their water, even sweat. This technology can help places that do not have enough water. It can also help people after disasters. Second, astronauts must use everything carefully because they have very little. The Earth also has limited resources, so we can learn from their way of life.

  • Recycling systems on the space station are designed for a handful of people and would be far too expensive to use for millions of people on Earth.
  • Similar recycling and water-cleaning technologies are already being developed on Earth without any help from space programs.

life-support technology
sustainable society
purification
浄化
water shortage
水不足
limited resources
closed system
