I do not think high-resolution satellite images are a serious threat to our privacy. For one thing, satellite images are not as detailed as many people imagine. Even the best commercial satellites can show the shape of a car or the roof of a house, but they cannot recognize a person's face. Most satellites also pass over the same place only at certain times, so they cannot follow someone throughout the day. In fact, smartphones and security cameras collect far more personal information than satellites do. For another, satellite images bring great benefits to society. They help farmers check the condition of their fields, allow rescue teams to find damaged roads after earthquakes, and let journalists report on events in places that are difficult to visit. Of course, clear rules on how such images may be used are necessary. Overall, however, the benefits clearly outweigh the risks.
